History of Cooksville
Cooksville is one of Mississauga's oldest communities, with its origins dating to 1808 when Daniel Harris became the area's first settler. The community was initially known as Harrisville, but was renamed in 1836 after Jacob Cook, a prominent figure who won the mail contract between York and Niagara, operated stagecoach lines, and built the first licensed tavern — the Cooksville House — in 1829. Cook's enterprising spirit set the tone for the area's development as a commercial crossroads.
Situated at the intersection of Dundas Street and Hurontario Street — historically known as 'Five and Ten' — Cooksville became the administrative centre for Toronto Township. The community was home to the first purpose-built Township Hall in 1874, and notably, Canada's first commercial winery, Clair House Winery, was established here in 1836. The Cooksville Brickyard supplied building materials for homes across Mississauga and Toronto for over a century until its closure in 1991.
