History of Applewood
Applewood's history is rooted in the apple orchards and market gardens that once blanketed this part of Toronto Township. The area was originally home to the farming villages of Dixie and Burnhamthorpe, which served as local service centres from the mid-1800s. Named after the abundant apple orchards that defined the landscape, the Applewood name became official when developer G.S. Shipp and Son purchased 25 acres and began building the Applewood Acres subdivision on March 1, 1951.
The development of Applewood Acres in the early 1950s represented a new vision of suburban living for post-war Canada. Shipp and Son built 733 homes in a carefully planned community with curving streets, generous setbacks, and a family-oriented atmosphere. The subdivision was followed by Applewood Heights in 1959 and Applewood Hills in 1964, creating the broader Applewood community known today. A notable resident was Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, who lived part-time in Applewood from the 1960s through the 1980s.
Today, Applewood is a mature, tree-lined neighbourhood that retains much of its 1950s character while welcoming new residents and investment. The community is served by excellent schools, local parks, and shopping centres, with convenient access to the QEW and Dundas Street corridors.
